The ESE (Exceptional Student Education) Department supports students who need specialized instruction and services to be successful in school.

In Polk County, ESE serves eligible children and young adults from age 3 through age 21 who have disabilities or unique learning needs.

The department partners with families to help students build skills, confidence, and independence for success in school and beyond.

The department works with school staff to develop Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) based on each student’s strengths and needs.

An IEP is a legal document outlining special education instructions for a qualifying student, and lists supports, goals and services for the student.

Services may include:

Welcome to Polk County Public Schools. We know that starting a new school year—or enrolling after a move—can bring many questions, especially when your child receives Exceptional Student Education (ESE) services through an Individual Educational Plan (IEP). This FAQ is designed to help families understand what to expect, what documents are helpful, and who can support you during the enrollment and transition process.

Quick Start: What Families Should Do First

  • Find your child’s zoned school based on your current address. You can use the PCPS website link: https://www.polkschoolsfl.com/schoolsandprograms/schoolzones 
  • Gather required enrollment documents, including proof of residence, birth certificate, immunization records, physical documentation when required, and parent/guardian identification.
  • Visit your zoned school to complete all enrollment paperwork.
  • Bring copies of your child’s current IEP, evaluations, therapy reports, behavior plan, medical information, assistive technology information, and recent report card or transcript if available.
  • Let the school know right away that your child has received ESE services, has an IEP, or may need support due to a disability.

Helpful Reminders for Families

  • You do not have to wait until school starts to share important information with the school.
  • Keep copies of your child’s IEP, evaluations, medical information, and progress reports in one folder.
  • If your child uses equipment, assistive technology, communication supports, or medical supplies, tell the school before the first day whenever possible.
  • If you moved from another district or state, provide the previous school’s contact information so records can be requested quickly.
  • If your child is anxious about returning to school, ask about transition supports such as a school visit, staff introduction, visual schedule, or gradual routines when appropriate.
