PCPS Remembers Robert J. Fisher
Polk County Public Schools is mourning the loss of Robert J. Fisher, a truly extraordinary educator.
Fisher passed away on Dec. 26. He was 95.
Fisher taught English, speech and drama at Haines City High, where the auditorium is named in his honor. He also went on to serve as our district’s supervisor of language arts.
He was named Polk County’s Teacher of the Year in 1968, 1969 and 1970, and is the only PCPS educator to have won that award three times. Fisher was also a state finalist for Teacher of the Year in 1968.
In 1976 Fisher led the creation of our district’s annual poetry contest for students; our highest award for poetry still bears his name. He believed that “every child has a poem inside.”
A celebration of life for Fisher will be held on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. at Oak Ridge Funeral Care in Winter Haven.
